“Every year, there are multitudes of minor and serious hand, wrist, shoulder and elbow injuries from home improvement projects and even crafts — this year, the risk may be higher with more people taking on projects while they spend more time at home during COVID-19,” says Dr. Steve Kwak. “From roof repair and landscaping to do-it-yourself home décor, fall projects can be fun and rewarding to accomplish, but they also come with some safety risks, so I wanted to share a list of guidelines for completing projects safely.”
Be sure to follow the safety tips listed below to help avoid injuries when taking on a project.
“If you’re injured while working with tools or doing heavy lifting and you feel any numbness, pain or loss of movement in any of your extremities, seek medical attention,” says Dr. Richard Spelts. “Serious injuries should be seen by a specialist as soon as possible.”
“Bumps and bruises are common amongst ‘do it yourselfers,’ and these should resolve within a few days to a week,” shares Dr. Mark Schamblin. “If you find pain and discomfort lasting longer than that, you should seek care from a medical professional. We would rather see you in the aisle of your favorite home improvement store, but if you are injured, Southern California Orthopedic Institute is here to help you with all your orthopedic needs. We have multiple offices to provide you with exceptional care and compassion.”
You can be safely seen for your arm and shoulder injuries by one of our elbow or shoulder experts when you need it. Call (818) 901-6600 or request an appointment online.
