Joseph Burns, M.D. grew up in Connecticut and attended Yale University where he played on both the football and baseball teams, earning the C. Gilbert Shepherd Award for leadership and interest in Yale Athletics.

After graduating from Yale, he spent a year traveling and visiting family in Australia and New Zealand, before returning to attend Georgetown Medical School in Washington, D.C.  While at Georgetown, Dr. Burns became interested in Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, graduating with Honors.  He then attended the University of Connecticut for orthopedic internship and residency.

After completing his orthopedic residency, Dr. Burns completed the Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute.  There he received specialized training in arthroscopic surgery, complex shoulder issues, and sports injuries.  He spent one year in Atlanta as the Sports & Shoulder Specialist for Resurgens Orthopaedics before returning to California to join the staff of SCOI.

Dr. Burns has a special interest in the shoulder.  He has helped to develop some of the most innovative surgical techniques available, developing minimally invasive arthroscopic alternatives to some of the shoulder’s most difficult problems, including Shoulder Arthritis and irreparable large Rotator Cuff Tears.  He is a consultant for several shoulder research groups.

A lifelong baseball fan, Dr Burns also has a special interest in the throwing athlete.  While in Connecticut, he was instrumental in developing a hi-tech computerized biomechanical model for analyzing the pitching/throwing mechanism.  He has given several lectures related to throwing injuries, their treatment, and their prevention.

He has published articles on Shoulder, Knee and Throwing Biomechanical topics and has written several textbook chapters.  Dr. Burns has presented scientific papers at national orthopedic meetings and has been an instructor at numerous orthopedic surgery teaching courses.

Dr. Burns is available to see patients at the Valencia and Simi Valley offices.
